What is
sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive treatment, widely administered across the globe to patients that want to have their spider veins and reticular veins removed from their body.
The procedure involves the injection of a solution called a sclerosant into the vein that you wish to target. This solution causes that vein to break down, collapse, and eventually disappear from your skin.
What are spider veins
and reticular veins?
Spider veins and reticular veins, although harmless, can make your skin look much older, adding years to your appearance. This results in many people losing their confidence to wear shorts, dresses, and swimsuits in public.
Spider veins are small blood vessels that have a branch-like pattern. They are usually blue, purple, or red in color and are mostly found among older women, specifically in their legs, ankles, and sometimes on the face as well. Spider veins are likely to become more visible as you get older.
Reticular veins are more or less similar to spider veins. The only difference is that they are usually larger, and thus, more prominent. They develop around the legs and ankles, just like spider veins, and are typically blue in color. Many medical professionals simply refer to both these veins collectively as spider veins.
Sclerotherapy may be most commonly used as a cosmetic procedure for removing spider veins, but it can also be used as a procedure for the reduction of pain and side effects resulting from damaged veins. To ensure that it is the right procedure for you, make sure you consult the team at Olam Med Spa first.
Only the best at
Olam Med Spa
At Olam Med Spa, the solution or sclerosant that we use in our sclerotherapy procedures is Asclera®. This is one of the most widely-used and most trusted names in the field and is the number one choice for many medical professionals treating patients with spider veins and reticular veins.
Asclera® is FDA-approved, and patients often report seeing visible results in a matter of just a few weeks. There are no known side effects, except for bruising, which is a common and natural reaction after your sclerotherapy procedure.
What is the
procedure like?
Sclerotherapy is a simple, minimally-invasive procedure that takes no more than an hour. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, the procedure may be completed in just 15 minutes.
There is no need for anesthesia since all the procedure involves is a medical professional carefully injecting the solution in the targeted area. Since this is a simple, in-office procedure that can be completed in just a few minutes, it is the ideal choice of treatment for many people.
First, your medical provider cleans and disinfects the targeted area thoroughly. Then, Asclera® is injected into the targeted vein using a fine needle; the sclerosing agent is injected into the targeted vein. This is virtually painless and feels like any other normal injection. You may feel slight discomfort, which is completely normal.
When Asclera® reaches the insides of the targeted veins, it closes down the walls of those veins, after which your blood is redirected to other healthy, unaffected veins. The targeted vein eventually breaks down and collapses, and is then absorbed by the body naturally. You can see that it slowly fades from view day after day until it finally disappears completely.
You may need more than one treatment to achieve the results you want. This mainly depends on the size of the area to be treated and how visible your spider veins are. It is also important to note that months after your sclerotherapy treatment, there is a chance that spider veins and reticular veins may reappear since they are a natural occurrence in the body.
What can I expect
after the procedure?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure involving little to no pain, and virtually no downtime is required. After your procedure is completed, there are no restrictions, and you can get on with your day as usual.
Although you don’t require any downtime to recover, we do advise that you engage in some mild exercises such as jumping or brisk walking so as to improve the blood flow in your legs. Since the treated veins can take a few weeks to completely dissolve and get reabsorbed by your body, engaging in mild physical activities that improve blood flow can help with the process.
The team at Olam Med Spa will do everything to ensure that you have a pleasant experience during your sclerotherapy treatment. To ensure that sclerotherapy is the best treatment option to achieve your goals, we believe a consultation with our medical professional is critical.
